When you get in a dark mood, watch out - it's very hard to get you out of it.
It's sometimes hard for you to cheer up, and your gloom can be contagious.

Vrinda...

Firstly, before I begin let me just clarify that we aren’t lesbians, just best friends.

Moving on… Vrinda and me met each other as young sixteen year olds in school, but we didn’t hit it off right from the start as such. Slowly but steadily though, we became best friends. Outwardly if one were to look at us, we are extremely different (and I don’t mean this in a physical context). She is quiet, she thinks before she speaks, she is diplomatic, she is the genius types and quite frankly I am none of those things….but beyond that, we think alike, we share the same feelings on various issues and basically connect despite being thousands of miles apart (she is in Toronto and I am in Bombay). She is my true friend (not the only one though) and has been there for me during every mess that I make in my life. She gives me unbiased and non-judgmental advice whenever I ask for it (which is quite often). I waste her money by singing tunelessly on the phone whenever she calls. I talk about myself quite a lot (as clearly seen here too). I crack idiotic “jokes”. I call her “pindi” and other names. Despite all, she still agrees to be my BFF. (Best friend forever for the uninitiated…a very bimbotic word but I like it). Absolutely patient, mild mannered (but very upfront when the need arises) and really funny, she is everything I could ask for in a best friend and more. We have had some gorgeous gorgeous memories haven’t we ?? Despite being physically away I have never felt an emotional crack between us. We talk daily and yes I promise as soon as I save enough I shall hop onto the next flight to Toronto. We hardly have fights (even when we used to live in the same country) and she makes me laugh a lot (wicked sense of humor). I will always wish her loads and loads of happiness and hopes she finds the direction she is looking for… Now I hope you are happy with this testimonial of sorts (because you are the only one who is probably going to read it) and I will talk to you tonight… Love ya…. Mwah !!!

Orkut: Pain or Pleasure ?

Having heard a lot about Orkut, I joined some six odd months ago and voila!! I found hoards of long lost friends with whom I had almost no contact with in years. Chaddi buddies, school mates, family friends and others. It’s a great way to be in touch with people via scrapping , since we now are too lazy to even email (but a line now and then is off course not a problem). You have some great communities (the tattoo one) which are quite informative (the games are idiotic though). So yes, orkut is India’s ( & Brazil’s & Pakistan’s) answer to facebook. So its all good so far…. but is it really?

Yes, orkut is addictive. I shamefully admit that I have spend a considerable amount of time searching for long lost friends and browsing through their profiles. But there are more serious problems…the least of them being the random “I wanna do frandship with u” messages. There are also the filthy sex messages that people receive (not restricted to only girls). There is also a serious lack of privacy on orkut as just about anyone can snatch pictures and pretend to be you (happened to me twice as far as I know, it could be more) or else take your pictures and make it into a porno profile (happened to a friend…horrible!!) Anyone can view your profile (this does not happen in facebook) and the number of friend requests from random strangers can get very very irritating.

Still, despite all my complaints, you might ask me why I am on orkut… maybe because its addictive. To add to that, this is also the only foolproof method through which I can stay in touch with old school friends and those who aren’t in Bombay or India. So when I weigh the pros and cons, it works for me… but I still am careful and have removed all my pictures (and displaying your cell no is just plain stupid!). I agree that sometimes one might meet some really cool strangers on orkut but that’s a rare find. But as of now orkut stays…

Coming soon… “Paying homage to Vrinda”… You asked for it and now u shall get it pindi!! (evil laughter)

A Circus Report

After very little persuasion from a friend, I decided to give the circus a visit. I was bored of the usual lunch/movie/coffee routine that passes for daytime entertainment and thought that this might be a refreshing change. The last memories that I have of the circus are cotton candy, sparkly clothes, lions and the trapeze (in that order). This time no lions…but the rest hadn’t changed.

Even then something was different now… The acts were the same: the clowns, the jugglers, the bikers, the animals, etc etc. What I saw, were the downcast eyes of the performers, the complete loss of hope in their entire being, like this was the last place they wanted to be in and yet there wasn’t a choice. My friend and I kept trying to maintain eye contact with the performers and clap as hard as we could in the hopes of getting genuine smiles but we barely succeeded .The clothes that I had thought of as sparkly were just plain cheap and whorish, to entice a truck driver crowd (A bombay circus has two kinds of crowds: parents with their kids and the “looking for a cheap thrill” variety). The women, despite quite a few of them being overweight and middle aged were made to wear these clothes (I had a desperate urge to go on stage and tell them to pull on some clothes). It was quite possible that these women might be prostituting themselves to make ends meet. The animals were being whipped to do their tricks and mistakes brought on more smacks (Maneka Gandhi would have had a heart attack). The clowns didn’t smile :(

All in all I left with a heavy heart.

After the show, we clicked a few pictures and then as were leaving we saw the housing facilities for the performers. They were just open air shacks (we know them as jhopadpattis). This was not the circus I imagined… My friend tells me that its different abroad, that the performers are well paid and the shows are glitzy. Not so here… here it is a means to make ends meet.

This left me thinking about how grateful we should be for what we have instead of cribbing about the silly things that we want (which are just luxuries). About how instead of feeling sorry for people, we should try to make a difference. To remember that each person can make a difference if he chooses too. That this world (or even just our city) is too big for us to sit back and feel sorry for ourselves. The “circus report” is just another example of how people in our country are living their lives and trying to survive. Don’t just think about this, do something !

P.S. – I didn’t stick to the grammer "rules", but I don’t really care as long as people understand what I am trying to say here…
