Having heard a lot about Orkut, I joined some six odd months ago and voila!! I found hoards of long lost friends with whom I had almost no contact with in years. Chaddi buddies, school mates, family friends and others. It’s a great way to be in touch with people via scrapping , since we now are too lazy to even email (but a line now and then is off course not a problem). You have some great communities (the tattoo one) which are quite informative (the games are idiotic though). So yes, orkut is India’s ( & Brazil’s & Pakistan’s) answer to facebook. So its all good so far…. but is it really?
Yes, orkut is addictive. I shamefully admit that I have spend a considerable amount of time searching for long lost friends and browsing through their profiles. But there are more serious problems…the least of them being the random “I wanna do frandship with u” messages. There are also the filthy sex messages that people receive (not restricted to only girls). There is also a serious lack of privacy on orkut as just about anyone can snatch pictures and pretend to be you (happened to me twice as far as I know, it could be more) or else take your pictures and make it into a porno profile (happened to a friend…horrible!!) Anyone can view your profile (this does not happen in facebook) and the number of friend requests from random strangers can get very very irritating.
Still, despite all my complaints, you might ask me why I am on orkut… maybe because its addictive. To add to that, this is also the only foolproof method through which I can stay in touch with old school friends and those who aren’t in Bombay or India. So when I weigh the pros and cons, it works for me… but I still am careful and have removed all my pictures (and displaying your cell no is just plain stupid!). I agree that sometimes one might meet some really cool strangers on orkut but that’s a rare find. But as of now orkut stays…

actually i'm not really into the whole social networking on cyberspace idea anyways. nothing beats actual face to face/telephone interaction. where there's a will, there's a way.
